About us:

Luno is the crypto investment app you can rely on, enabling you to buy, store and explore crypto securely. We’re committed to putting the power of cryptocurrency in everyone's hands sensibly and responsibly.

Since 2013, we’ve helped millions of people around the world invest safely in crypto. We do this by cutting through the hype and supporting customers at every step of the way. All products and cryptocurrencies on our platform must first meet stringent legal, risk and technical security standards.

Transparency is key for us. Luno stores all crypto on a 1:1 basis and we have rigorous processes in place so you can be confident your investment is secure. We’re available in more than 40 countries around the world and we work closely with respective regulators in all of these markets to be fully compliant, as we believe this is the best way to help everyone, everywhere, invest safely.

About the team:

Our Site Reliability Engineering team builds and maintains the Luno platform, supports development teams and manages data infrastructure. Our platform is accessed by over 10 million customers in nearly 50 countries.

  • The SRE team collaborates with our engineering teams to build tools and scalable shared infrastructure that is the backbone of the Luno platform.
  • We champion reliability, observability, automation and consistency throughout the engineering organisation.
  • Data is the lifeblood of our platform and as such the reliability, security and performance of our data platform is mission critical.
  • We're agile, use scrum, continuous integration and continuous delivery, deploying to production every single day.

Your mission will be:

  • Design, implement, and maintain high-availability database clusters using technologies such as Aurora MySQL / PostgreSQL ensuring 99.99% uptime across production environments
  • Architect and manage robust data replication strategies, implementing both synchronous and asynchronous replication solutions while maintaining data consistency and integrity across multiple data centers
  • Drive cost optimization initiatives through capacity planning, resource utilization analysis, and implementation of efficient storage strategies, resulting in measurable infrastructure savings
  • Monitor and tune database performance using advanced diagnostic tools, query optimization techniques, and performance metrics to maintain response times within SLA requirements
  • Design and execute comprehensive disaster recovery testing programs, including regular failover drills and recovery time objective (RTO) validation
  • Develop and maintain automated backup solutions with point-in-time recovery capabilities while ensuring compliance with data retention policies and regulatory requirements
  • Implement robust security measures including encryption at rest and in transit, audit logging, and role-based access control (RBAC) aligned with zero-trust security principles
  • Collaborate with development teams to optimize database design, improve query performance, and provide data modeling expertise

A little about you:

  • Friendly, transparent, articulate and driven to succeed.
  • Good skills and knowledge of collaborative leadership, facilitation, situational awareness, conflict resolution, empowerment, and increasing transparency.
  • Track record of solving complex scaling problems with a focus on reliability and security.
  • Track record designing and implementing innovative solutions that improve operational efficiency and minimise toil.
  • A diverse toolkit of techniques to help drive continuous improvement i.e. contribution to the open-source community, training and certifications, regular attendance at conferences and meetups where you continue to advance your data engineering skills and techniques.

It’s completely OK if you don’t tick all of the boxes – they’re a guide based on what we’d love to see, but we appreciate that excellent engineering leaders have diverse backgrounds.

Any questions?

Our team is on hand to help you with any questions you may have during the interview process. However, here’s some of the most common questions we get:

A typical process will take approximately four weeks to complete from application to offer. Depending on the nature of the role, or the process required to fill it, the duration could be longer or shorter.

Luno works on a remote but reachable model. To learn more about this, please take a look at our page about remote but reachable.

To prepare for your interview, we suggest reviewing our Moontality values. At Luno we apply these principles daily. During your interview process, you will be assessed not only on your skill alignment for the role, but also your behavioural alignment to Luno’s Moontality.

Luno welcomes and considers applications from candidates who have a right to work within the country they are applying to. At the moment, Luno does however not sponsor visas. Any employment offer made by Luno is contingent upon you maintaining the right to work in the country. Please let us know if your immigration status changes after you have submitted your application.

Unfortunately this is not something we currently offer.

We do undertake pre-employment checks, these will vary from country to country.
